The Delhi Transport Department has issued a new warning to vehicle owners: vehicles without fuel-based colour-coded stickers may soon incur fines. This rule applies to both new and existing vehicles and is intended to make it easier for authorities to identify fuel types quickly. The initiative is part of the city’s broader strategy to tackle increasing pollution levels.

According to a recent public notice, all vehicles in the National Capital Territory (NCT) are now required to display chromium-based hologram stickers. This measure follows a Supreme Court directive issued on August 12, 2018, and is in line with Rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.

What are Colour-Coded Fuel Stickers?

Colour-coded fuel stickers are holographic labels affixed to a vehicle’s windscreen, designed to provide key information at a glance. These stickers display essential details such as the vehicle's registration number, engine and chassis numbers, the issuing authority, and a laser-etched PIN. Most importantly, they indicate the type of fuel the vehicle uses—petrol, diesel, CNG, or electricity—making it easy for enforcement officers to identify.

This regulation applies to all vehicles sold after April 1, 2019, as well as to those registered before March 31, 2019. Owners of older vehicles are encouraged to contact their dealerships to have these stickers installed.

How to Book Your Colour-Coded Stickers Online

To simplify the process, the government offers an online facility to book colour-coded stickers—either with or without new High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP). You can use the BookMyHSRP website or the Delhi Transport Department portal to schedule your sticker installation.

The process is simple. Just enter your vehicle’s registration details, including the chassis and engine numbers (available on your RC card). If your vehicle already has HSRP plates, select the "Only Colour Sticker" option. If you also need new plates, choose the appropriate option for that. After selecting your preferred fitment location and time slot, verify your mobile number via OTP, complete the payment, and you're good to go. You’ll receive a confirmation SMS and a payment receipt.

Keep in mind, not displaying the colour-coded sticker can result in fines under the Motor Vehicles Act. If your car’s windshield is still missing one, now’s the time to get it sorted before enforcement tightens.
