Sushant's Legacy: A Glimpse into His Sister's Book on His 38th Birth Anniversary
When Sushant was born
In her poignant account, Shweta expressed that her parents had desired a son when she was born, as her mother had tragically lost her first son.“My family members have often told me that Mom and Dad wanted a son, more so because Mumma's first child had been a son and she had lost him at a very young age,” Shweta wrote. Following numerous rituals and spiritual endeavors, Sushant came into the world on January 12, 1986.
On growing up together
Shweta expressed a profound sense of protectiveness towards Sushant, attributing it to their mother's belief that she was “the catalyst for his much-desired arrival into our lives.” “Growing up, we were each other's shadows – always together. We played and danced, studied and got into mischief, ate and slept, and did everything in unison, to the point people forget we were two separate individuals; they even called us ‘Gudia-Gulshan’ as if we were a single entity,” Shweta wrote, referring to them as 'Gudia-Gulshan,' using the nicknames given to Shweta and Sushant.
His reaction to her first-period
Shweta remembered when their mother advised Sushant to treat her with care, as he used to playfully tease her, following her first period in sixth grade. When disposing of a pad, Sushant questioned his sister, saying, “What it it that you can't share with me? I don't like this barrier between us.” Shweta highlighted that this demonstrated “his remarkable sensitivity and our profound closeness.”
On her wedding
"As I readied myself for departure, Bhai embraced me tightly, tears streaming down both our faces. The moment was heart-wrenching – we were aware that we wouldn't share a living space anymore, and the luxury of frequent encounters would be a thing of the past," Shweta expressed, acknowledging her regret about parting ways with her brother upon moving to the US following her wedding.
When did she last see and talked to him?
Shweta mentioned that despite Sushant's hectic schedule due to his rapid ascent in Bollywood, he didn't manage to visit her. However, she made annual visits to India to meet him from 2014 to 2017. Unfortunately, she couldn't make the trip in 2018 and 2019. In January 2020, she made a special effort to visit him but was unable to do so. Their last conversation took place over the phone four days before his tragic discovery in his Mumbai apartment on June 14, 2020. During this call, she extended another invitation for him to visit the United States.
On getting the news
On the night of June 13 in the United States, Shweta mentioned that it was her husband who conveyed the news to her. “A chill ran down my spine and I lay in bed paralysed. I didn't scream. I didn't cry. By conviction of my practice, I fell into a space that sucked all the shock that my body and mind were going through,” she wrote.
On not being able to see him one last time
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Shweta remembered facing challenges in securing a timely ticket for a direct flight from the US to India. Unfortunately, by the time she arrived in India, Sushant's body had already been cremated. “The realisation that I would not be able to see him for the last time and bid him a proper farewell left me feeling angry and frustrated. There was no closure for me.” Shweta mentioned that her spiritual exploration, aimed at finding solace after her brother's passing, inspired her to pen her latest book titled "Pain: A Portal to Enlightenment.
