Renowned Canada-based singer Shubhneet Singh , who goes by the stage name Shubh , is set to embark on a multi-city tour across India in the coming days. However, his tour has been marred by controversy and backlash ahead of his visit.
Reports indicate that several members of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BYJM) have accused Shubh of allegedly supporting separatist Khalistani elements. The controversy centers around an Instagram Story posted by Shubh during the Punjab police's pursuit of fugitive Amritpal Singh . In this Story, a distorted map of India was displayed, notably omitting Punjab and Jammu-Kashmir. This post quickly went viral on the internet, sparking outrage.
Adding to the unfolding drama, Indian cricketer Virat Kohli , who was previously seen enjoying Shubh's music, has reportedly unfollowed the singer on social media. This move has further intensified the scrutiny surrounding Shubh's alleged affiliations.
The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BYJM) has demanded the cancellation of Shubh's scheduled concerts in India. The President of BJYM Mumbai conveyed their stance to a news outlet, saying, "There is no room for Khalistanis, who pose a threat to the integrity and unity of India. We will not permit Canadian singer Shubh to perform on the sacred land of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj , Mumbai. If appropriate action is not taken, the event organizers will face our opposition."
In the midst of the controversy, an active netizen shared images of Shubh alongside his posts featuring the distorted map of India and his celebration of Chandrayaan-3's success. They commented, " Khalistani Canadian rapper and singer Shubhneet Singh, better known as Shubh, previously shared a distorted map of India, excluding Jammu & Kashmir, the North-East, and Punjab. Why is he now celebrating the success of Chandrayaan-3? Because he is coming to India for his concert tour. He is being granted entry into India and will earn lakhs of rupees from Indian audiences, the very people whose nation he has allegedly defamed. This money could potentially be used for Khalistani propaganda against India. Let's not be deceived by these Khalistani artists; they may be seeking an audience from both sides."
The controversy surrounding Shubh's visit has ignited a passionate debate about freedom of expression and the consequences of political statements made by artists in a globalized world. As his tour dates approach, it remains to be seen whether the controversy will impact his performances or reception in India.
