In a rapidly evolving work environment, the influence of Generation Z on professional communication is becoming increasingly pronounced. Recent findings from a survey conducted by Barclays LifeSkills, a Barclays Bank initiative, reveal a significant transformation in workplace language, with 71% of workers in the United Kingdom acknowledging the shift towards informality. The survey, released on Tuesday, September 12, raises questions about the future of traditional email sign-offs and the language of formal communication in the workplace.

The results of the survey suggest that once-familiar phrases like "Yours truly," "Yours sincerely," and "To whom it may concern" may become obsolete in professional communication over the next decade. The influence of this generational shift extends to the usage of casual sign-offs, with terms like "Ta!" gaining popularity. Interestingly, while 29% of workers consider "Ta!" a little too informal, the term "Hiya!" sparks mixed opinions, with 42% perceiving it as friendly, 36% as casual, and 26% as overly familiar.

The transition from formal language to a more relaxed and approachable style of communication can be attributed to various factors, one of which is the widespread adoption of online messaging apps in the workplace. These apps, such as Slack, Microsoft Teams , and Google Chat, provide employees with a plethora of ways to express themselves, often incorporating emoticons and GIFs to convey their personalities. Notably, Generation Z is at the forefront of this shift, being nearly twice as likely as older generations to utilize instant messaging services at work, while professionals aged 55 and above prefer email, considering it a more professional medium.

However, Generation Z workers express a different sentiment about email, with 40% feeling that it restricts their ability to express themselves freely. Kirstie Mackey, director of the Barclays LifeSkills initiative, highlighted the significance of this shift, stating, "Our research shows that the next generation will clearly make their mark on the workforce in terms of how we communicate. While the shift to more personable language is a positive one, it is critical to demonstrate an understanding of social etiquette in the workplace, which differs from school or university. Striking the right balance while still displaying your personality through your communications is key."

The impact of Generation Z on the workplace transcends language alone. This generation has already instigated changes in various aspects of work culture, including an increased demand for salary transparency and a preference for more casual office attire. Additionally, a recent poll discovered that young adults may take up to two weeks to feel confident in a new job. The survey, which included 1,000 participants aged 18 to 25, revealed that Generation Z workers typically spend eight days before their new job commences worrying about fitting in with their team or knowing their role.

When embarking on new job roles or apprenticeships, many young workers turn to social media for guidance, with TikTok emerging as a particularly helpful platform in this regard. The emergence of these trends reflects the dynamic nature of the modern workplace and the evolving role of Generation Z in shaping the future of professional communication and culture.
