Mattel 's Barbie movie has unveiled a new character known as 'Weird Barbie', showcasing disheveled marker-streaked makeup, unconventional clothing combinations, and a delightfully chaotic hairstyle, or even occasionally an absence of hair. This unique interpretation of Barbie was met with widespread acceptance, prompting Mattel to escalate the status of Weird Barbie by inducting her as an official character.
The renowned toy company behind the iconic Barbie line has introduced a limited-edition doll inspired by the character portrayed by Kate McKinnon in Greta Gerwig's popular movie, "Barbie." In the film, Margot Robbie brings McKinnon's character to life, sending Barbie on a captivating journey.
Upon the grand introduction of Weird Barbie, Mattel boldly proclaimed, "If anyone knows anything about keeping it weird, it’s Weird Barbie."
The exclusive doll, available in a limited edition, showcases a vibrant hot pink ensemble that closely mirrors the attire donned by McKinnon's character in the movie. Alongside facial markings, the doll features uniquely styled and colored hair, "emulating a doll that’s been played with just a little too much," as described by Mattel in the product details. The doll is elegantly dressed in a pink dress adorned with abstract patterns throughout, coupled with eye-catching bright green snakeskin boots, reminiscent of McKinnon's character's fashion choices.
Within a broader collection influenced by the blockbuster film, the doll stands as one of seven items, accompanied by offerings such as a Hot Wheels Corvette set and an array of Barbie and Ken dolls.
Among its assortment, the collection encompasses various items including the Ken Doll, Gloria Doll, and President Doll. Additionally, it features the doll showcasing Stereotypical Barbie's iconic pink gingham dress, a wardrobe piece sported by Margot Robbie's character in the film, accompanied by the striking Gold Disco Jumpsuit collectible doll.

“With the latest editions to the collection, we are offering even more ways for fans to immerse themselves in Barbie Land and celebrate the characters and stories they see on screen,” Lisa McKnight, Mattel’s executive vice president and chief brand officer, said in a statement, as per CNN. “Barbie continues to be the cultural event of the summer, and as we chart Mattel’s path forward, she will continue to serve as an icon of empowerment and inspiration for generations to come.”
The anticipated shipping date for Weird Barbie is set for the conclusion of May 2024. As of now, interested customers can place a pre-order for the doll on the Mattel website, priced at $50, until August 18.
Following its debut, the latest movie centered around one of the most beloved toy icons has etched its name in entertainment history. Within a mere three weeks, global box office earnings for the Barbie film surpassed the impressive milestone of $1 billion, establishing filmmaker Greta Gerwig as the inaugural female director to achieve such a feat.
