The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heat wave alert for Delhi and several northern states, with the warning in effect until April 18. The advisory also extends to multiple regions across India as temperatures are expected to rise sharply in the coming days. Authorities have urged residents to take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses, as the extreme conditions could disrupt daily life.
In an official statement, the IMD said, “A fresh spell of heatwave is likely to commence over parts of Northwest India and Gujarat from April 15.”
Regions Under Severe Heat Wave Threat
West Rajasthan will face heat wave conditions on April 14–15, escalating to severe heat wave in isolated areas from April 16–18.
Gujarat may experience heat waves at isolated locations between April 15–17.
Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, East Rajasthan, and West Madhya Pradesh are also under alert, with East Rajasthan likely to endure severe heat wave conditions on April 18.
Weather Systems Influencing Conditions
The IMD attributes the rising temperatures to upper air cyclonic circulations over northeast Assam and north Bangladesh, along with a trough extending from central Assam to the West Central Bay of Bengal. While these systems are driving the heat, some relief is expected in the form of:
Scattered to widespread rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in northeastern and eastern India over the next week.
Isolated hailstorms in Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh (April 12) and Jharkhand (April 15).
Southern India to Experience Rain & Thunderstorms
Meanwhile, southern states, including:
