EPFO Introduces Instant UPI-Based Provident Fund Withdrawals by June 2025
The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is gearing up for a significant digital upgrade. They plan to introduce UPI-based claim processing , which will allow members to access their provident fund instantly.
Labour and employment secretary Sumita Dawra shared the news with the media. She confirmed that the new feature is expected to be available by the end of May or in June.
“We are in the final stages of testing and will launch the UPI frontend for EPFO claims soon. Members will be able to access their EPF accounts directly through the UPI interface and make auto-claims. If eligible, the approval process will be instant, ensuring quick credit to their accounts,” she stated.
This new system will enable members to withdraw up to Rs 1 lac immediately through an automated process. They can also select their preferred bank account for the transfers.
Currently, claim settlements take about 2–3 days. With UPI integration, withdrawals are expected to be completed within minutes.
The EPFO has also broadened the scope of fund usage. Members can now make withdrawals for housing, education, and marriage, in addition to the existing provisions for medical emergencies.
To make this shift possible, over 120 databases have been integrated. Additionally, 95% of claims are now automated, which reduces paperwork and speeds up the process.
Officials believe this initiative will revolutionize the provident fund system. They compare it to the way UPI transformed digital payments in India.
