First Look: Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Mock Model Debuting Mid-October
In a notable development, Bharat Earth Movers Limited ( BEML ), headquartered in Bengaluru , is on track to deliver a mock-up model of the sleeper version of the Vande Bharat train by mid-October .
This initiative aligns with the concept introduced by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF). Once the design is given the green light after evaluating the full-sized coach, production of the prototype will kick off shortly thereafter.
BEML has secured a contract worth 675 crore rupees to provide ten Vande Bharat sleeper trains. The full-scale model of the sleeper coach is anticipated to be completed by October 20th.
According to an ICF official, constructing the mock-up is a crucial preliminary phase before commencing the production of the actual prototype. The prototype will comprise eleven AC III-tier coaches and four AC II-tier coaches, with plans to unveil it during this fiscal year.
The AC II tier coaches will showcase enhanced aesthetics, including sleek panels, roof-integrated lighting, a more user-friendly six-step ladder for reaching upper berths, and larger windows. The design conveys a high-quality global appeal while emphasizing safety by eliminating sharp edges.
To transform the current coach's interior into a sleeper design, we will swiftly implement modifications. This process can be completed quickly since we won't be altering the shell and other key components of the design. BEML has partnered with a company to create the interior design for the sleeper coaches, taking into account input from ICF. This design will serve as the template for the actual production model.
After receiving approval for the prototype, Indian Railways plans to expand production, with the goal of introducing Vande Bharat trains on long-distance routes. The manufacturing contract for the sleeper versions of the Vande Bharat trains has been granted to two companies: BEML and BHEL-Titagarh Wagons JV. BEML, drawing on its extensive experience in manufacturing railway coaches and metro rail rakes, will produce Vande Bharat rakes at its Bengaluru facility. Meanwhile, BHEL-Titagarh will initially produce a few rakes at their West Bengal plant before transitioning the production to ICF in Chennai.
The joint venture plans to manufacture 80 railway rakes. Once the required approvals are secured, production will start at the ICF (Integral Coach Factory). The Chennai factory has already set aside space and provided machinery for the companies to begin working on the coaches.
ICF will offer shelter, personnel, and various amenities to assist the contractors in the assembly and testing of the coaches. Additionally, ICF will set up an automated wheel line machine, a painting booth, cranes, and a dedicated facility to commission the rakes, thus enhancing the efficiency of the manufacturing process.
