Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri is Scheduled to Brief the Parliamentary Panel on the India-Pakistan Situation on May 19
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri is set to brief the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs on May 19 about the recent spike and subsequent easing of tensions between India and Pakistan. The meeting, chaired by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, comes in the wake of a major military operation that followed a deadly terror attack.
The briefing will center around Operation Sindoor , India’s forceful military response to the May 5 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, which killed 26 civilians, including a Nepali national. The operation, launched on May 7, was a large-scale, coordinated offensive across air, land, and sea, targeting terror camps deep within Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (PoJK).
Indian forces struck hard, reportedly eliminating over 100 terrorists and damaging 11 Pakistani air bases. The operation was conducted with what officials described as “calibrated restraint” to avoid civilian harm.
Tensions spiked sharply in the aftermath, with both nations locked in a brief but intense standoff. However, on Saturday, the situation appeared to cool when the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries agreed to halt all military activity from 5 p.m. onward.
But the calm was short-lived. Just hours after the ceasefire began, Indian air defences intercepted suspected Pakistani drones over Srinagar during a blackout, raising fresh alarms about the fragility of the truce.
Speaking earlier, Misri stressed that India has taken a “very serious note” of the incident, urging Pakistan to act responsibly and honor the ceasefire agreement .
Misri’s upcoming briefing is expected to be one of the most closely followed in recent times, given the scale of military action and the delicate state of peace. He has regularly updated the panel on key foreign affairs, but this session could shape the course of India's diplomatic and strategic posture moving forward.
