Historic Moment: PM Narendra Modi Inaugurates New Parliament Building and Installs Sacred 'Sengol'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla inaugurated the new Parliament building in New Delhi on Sunday. The highlight of the event was the installation of the sacred ' Sengol ' in the Lok Sabha chamber. The 'Sengol', which was accepted by the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on the night of August 14, 1947, holds significant historical and symbolic importance.
Prime Minister Modi paid his respects to the 'Sengol' by prostrating before it, and sought blessings from priests representing various adheenams . The inauguration marks a significant milestone in the development of India's democracy.


Inauguration Ceremony
Arrangements have been made to accommodate 888 members in the Lok Sabha and 384 members in the Rajya Sabha in the newly constructed Parliament building. The joint session of both Houses will be held in the Lok Sabha chamber. Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone of the new Parliament Building on December 10, 2020.


PM Honors Workers
Dedicating the new Parliament building to the nation, Prime Minister Modi honoured the workers who contributed to its construction. He felicitated them with traditional shawls and presented mementoes in recognition of their efforts. Union Home Minister Amit Shah had previously announced that the Prime Minister would honour approximately 60,000 workers (shram yogis) during the inauguration.

'Havan' Ceremony
Prime Minister Modi, joined by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, performed a 'havan' (sacred fire ritual) for the new Parliament building. Priests from adheenams in Tamil Nadu offered flowers to the historic sceptre 'Sengol' as part of the ceremony, symbolizing the inauguration of the new Parliament building.


Congratulatory Messages
Prominent figures from the entertainment industry, including Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan , actor Akshay Kumar, music composer Ilaiyaraaja, and actor Rajinikanth, congratulated Prime Minister Modi on the inauguration of the new Parliament building. They admired the architectural marvel and its significance in representing India's growth and democracy.

New Parliament Building as the Temple of Democracy
Prime Minister Modi described the new Parliament building as a 'temple of democracy' and expressed his hope that it would further strengthen India's development trajectory and empower its citizens. He urged people to share the video showcasing the newly-constructed complex on social media with the hashtag 'MyParliamentMyPride', emphasizing the building's significance to the nation.

PM's Meeting with Adheenams
A day before the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi met with Adheenams at his residence and sought their blessings. The Adheenams, who arrived from Tamil Nadu, presented him with special gifts, including 'Sengols'. This meeting signifies the Prime Minister's respect for spiritual leaders and their contribution to the cultural heritage of the country.

Significance of 'Sengol'
'Sengol', a historical sceptre originating from Tamil Nadu, holds great historical and symbolic importance. It was given by the British to Jawaharlal Nehru to symbolize the transfer of power from the colonial rulers to India. The word 'Sengol' is derived from the Tamil word 'Semmai', meaning 'righteousness'. The sceptre is made of silver, coated with gold, and crowned with the sacred Nandi, representing 'nyaya' or righteousness.
