The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has announced that all citizens who received their PAN cards using Aadhaar enrolment ID on or before October 1, 2024, must link their PAN with Aadhaar by December 31, 2025. If not linked by this date, their PAN will become inoperative from January 1, 2026.
Who Needs to Link PAN with Aadhaar?
- If you got your PAN using an Aadhaar enrolment ID before October 1, 2024, you must link it by December 31, 2025.
- You can link for free in this case.
- All other PAN holders had to link by June 30, 2023, but they can still do it now by paying a penalty of ₹1,000.
How to Link PAN with Aadhaar?
If your PAN is inactive due to non-linking, you can reactivate it by paying the fee and then submitting the linking request. Here's how:
I. Pay the ₹1,000 Penalty
Required Documents:
- Aadhaar card
- PAN card
- Mobile number linked to Aadhaar
Steps to Pay the Penalty:
1. Go to Income Tax e-Filing Portal.
2. Under “Quick Links,” click on ‘e-Pay Tax’.
3. Enter your PAN, confirm it, add your mobile number and click ‘Continue’.
4. After OTP verification, click ‘Continue’ again on the next page.
5. Under the ‘Income Tax’ tab, click ‘Proceed’.
6. Select Assessment Year as 2025-26, and Payment Type as:
- Minor Head: Other Receipts (500)
- Sub-type: Fee for delay in linking PAN with Aadhaar

- If payment is not verified, a message will prompt you to pay the fee.
- Once the payment is confirmed (usually within an hour), retry the linking process.
Option 2: By Logging In
- Register or log in at e-filing portal.
- After logging in, go to ‘Link Aadhaar’ (or find it under ‘My Profile’).
- Enter Aadhaar number, click ‘Validate’.
- A pop-up message will confirm successful linking.
Note: It may take 7–30 days for PAN to become active again.
