Manipur Video Horror: 'Best' Police Station In India Located Nearly 1 KM Away From Incident Spot, Reveals Report
The Kangpokpi district's B Phainom village in Manipur witnessed a horrifying incident, a video of which surfaced recently. The location of this incident was found to be almost one kilometer away from the police station, which had previously been recognized and awarded as India's best police station by the government, according to a report.
The Ministry of Home Affairs determines the ranking for the best police station based on the performance of the police in handling cases related to crimes against women and crimes against vulnerable sections of society.
The police station known as Nongpok Sekmai police station was bestowed with the title of 'Best in the Country' in the year 2020, as reported by India Today.
About the incident
During the violence-ridden situation in the state, a distressing incident occurred in B Phainom village on May 4. Two Kuki women fell victim to a heinous act as they were paraded naked, assaulted, and gang-raped by a mob. The incident took place on the second day of clashes, and it was reported that around 800-1,000 miscreants, armed with weapons, entered the B Phainom village in Kangpokpi district at approximately 3 pm on that day.
Four Arrested within 48 hours
The Manipur Police has taken swift action in the viral video case and apprehended four of the main accused within 48 hours. The authorities are diligently continuing their search for the remaining individuals involved in the heinous crime of abduction and gang rape under Nongpok Sekmai Police Station in Thoubal District. With the recent arrests, the total number of individuals in custody has reached four, as stated in the official tweet released by the state police.
Prime Accused House Set Ablaze
Following the arrest of the prime accused, Huirem Herodas Meitei, in the horrifying incident, a separate group of mobs resorted to violence and set his house ablaze on Thursday night. Meitei was identified as the man wearing a green shirt, seen holding one of the women while they were paraded naked. The incident occurred just hours after his arrest. Additionally, three other individuals involved in the case have also been arrested in connection with the incident.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly condemned the incident in Manipur, expressing his deep concern for the victims by stating, “What has happened to daughters of Manipur can never be forgiven, guilty will not be spared". In response to the horrific incident, the Opposition has been criticizing the Prime Minister and demanding a discussion in Parliament to address the matter.
The Supreme Court of India, upon becoming aware of the matter, has directed both the Centre and the Manipur government to take immediate action, asserting, "if the government does not take action, we will”. The video that has gone viral on social media depicts a horrifying incident in Manipur, where two women were subjected to the shameful act of being paraded naked and molested by a mob. According to reports, the video is approximately two months old, and the distressing incident occurred on May 4, 2023, the day after violent clashes erupted in the northeastern state.
CM Biren to look into Capital Punishment
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has expressed his commitment to conducting a comprehensive investigation into the case. Despite the incident coming to his attention more than two months after the FIR was registered, CM Biren has asserted that stringent measures will be taken, and he will advocate for capital punishment for the accused involved in the horrific incident.
