Securing your Aadhaar card in the event of loss or theft is now possible through UIDAI 's locking feature. This service, accessible via registered cellphone numbers or the UIDAI website, prevents unauthorized usage until the card is found or replaced.

Residents can lock their Aadhaar (UID) either through the UIDAI website (www.myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in) or the mAadhaar app. Once locked, all authentication attempts using the UID, UID Token, or VID for biometric, demographic, or OTP modes are restricted.

To unlock their Aadhaar, residents can utilize the mAadhaar app, the UIDAI website, or the latest VID. Upon unlocking , authentication becomes possible again using the Aadhaar (UID), UID Token, and VID.

Addressing concerns raised by some Aadhaar holders on social media platforms, UIDAI has provided guidance on unlocking Aadhaar .

According to UIDAI's latest social media post, here's how to unlock Aadhaar :

Step 1: Generate a 16-digit Virtual ID (VID) before proceeding to Lock/Unlock Aadhaar. VID is essential for these operations.
Generate your VID through the Dashboard or by sending an SMS to 1947 (RVID [last 4 or 8 digits of UID]).
Step 2: After generating your VID, return to the unlocking page and proceed to lock your Aadhaar using the VID. From then on, authenticate using your VID for necessary transactions, as Aadhaar number-based authentication will be disabled once locked.
Step 3: To unlock Aadhaar , return to the specified page. Only VID can unlock Aadhaar, enabling Aadhaar number-based authentication.
Residents must possess the latest 16-digit VID to unlock their UID. If forgotten, VID can be retrieved via SMS services.

In case of forgetting the VID after locking, residents can retrieve it through SMS services. Send an SMS to 1947 from the registered mobile number with "RVID [last 4 or 8 digits of UID]" format.

To lock UID, residents need a 16-digit VID. If not already obtained, VID can be acquired via SMS or the UIDAI website (www.myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in). Send an SMS with "GVID [last 4 or 8 digits of UID]" format to 1947 to obtain VID.

By following these steps, residents can efficiently manage the security of their Aadhaar cards, safeguarding them against unauthorized access and potential misuse.
