The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY)—India’s flagship housing scheme—has now been extended until December 2025. This gives eligible urban and rural families additional time to apply for affordable housing under the Modi government’s initiative.
Launched to provide housing for all, PMAY aims to support economically weaker sections (EWS), lower income groups (LIG), and other marginalized communities with durable, all-weather homes in both urban and rural areas.
According to government data, more than 92.61 lakh homes have already been built under this scheme, reflecting its wide reach and impact.
Who is Eligible for PM Awas Yojana ?
Eligibility under PMAY varies depending on the urban or rural category and is based on income level, housing status, and social criteria.
PMAY-Urban (PMAY-U)
To apply under the urban component, applicants must not own a pucca (permanent) house anywhere in India and must fall within one of the following income groups:
- EWS (Economically Weaker Section): Annual income up to ₹3 lakh
- LIG (Lower Income Group): Annual income between ₹3 lakh and ₹6 lakh
- MIG-I (Middle Income Group I): Annual income between ₹6 lakh and ₹9 lakh
- Slum Dwellers: People living in informal settlements or slums
Eligible beneficiaries can also include:
- Rickshaw pullers
- Street vendors
- Daily wage workers
- Industrial and migrant laborers
- Women from EWS and LIG groups, including widows, and individuals from SC, ST, OBC, and minority communities
PMAY-Gramin (PMAY-G)
The rural component gives priority to families identified in the Socio-Economic and Caste Census (SECC) and meeting the following:
- Families without any house
- Families living in kutcha (non-permanent) homes with up to two rooms
However, households are not eligible if they:
- Own a pucca house
- Possess vehicles, mechanized farming tools, or significant household assets
- Have taxable income, large land holdings, or expensive appliances such as refrigerators
Note: The government’s aim with this extension is to ensure no eligible family is left behind from having a safe and permanent home.
