Prime Minister Narendra Modi Submis His Resignation To President, Expected Swearing-In On June 8
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tendered his resignation alongside the Council of Ministers to President Droupadi Murmu. A press communique stated, "The President has accepted the resignation and requested Shri Narendra Modi and the Council of Ministers to continue till the new government assumes office."
Sources informed India Today that Modi is poised to be sworn in for a third consecutive term as Prime Minister on the evening of June 8. While the NDA secured 292 seats, just surpassing the majority mark, the BJP fell short of a majority on its own. Should the NDA assume power, Modi would become the second leader, after former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, to retain leadership for a third term.
This evening, top leaders of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) are slated to convene, aiming to assess the Lok Sabha election outcomes and discuss the intricacies of forming a new government.
JD(U) chief and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, alongside TDP President N. Chandrababu Naidu, poised to assume the role of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, will participate in the meeting. Other top leaders of the BJP and its allied parties are anticipated to join as well.
They are anticipated to extend congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on the brink of a record-equalling third term, and engage with him in discussions regarding the intricacies of the forthcoming government. This new government is likely to have a distinct composition and character, with a larger share allocated to the BJP's allies.
While the NDA comfortably exceeds the majority mark of 272 in the 543-member Lok Sabha, the BJP has for the first time since 2014 fallen short of the magic number, relying on its allies for government formation.
TDP, JD(U), the Shiv Sena led by Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde, and LJP led by Chirag Paswan (Ram Vilas) have secured 16, 12, seven, and five seats respectively, highlighting their pivotal role in the formation of the government.
