Railway Accident Victims To Receive Tenfold Increase In Compensation | Full Report
The Railway Board has updated the compensation payouts for victims of train accidents, significantly raising the amount provided in the event of a fatality from Rs 50,000 to Rs 5 lakh. Adjustments have also been made for cases involving severe injuries and minor injuries.
The relief payments were last updated in 2012 and 2013. In the event of a fatality, the relief assistance has been raised from ₹50,000 to ₹5 lakh. For severe injuries, the aid has been increased from ₹25,000 to ₹2.5 lakh. In the case of minor injuries, the amount has been raised to ₹50,000, up from ₹5,000.
The updated relief amounts will also be extended to individuals involved in accidents at manned-level crossings where the railway is initially deemed liable.
If a train passenger sustains severe injuries in an accident and needs hospitalization for more than 30 days, an extra payment of ₹3,000 per day will be disbursed every 10 days or upon discharge, whichever occurs sooner.
In situations where passengers suffer severe injuries in unfortunate incidents requiring hospitalization lasting longer than 30 days, an additional relief payment of ₹1,500 per day will be provided after each 10-day period or upon their discharge, whichever occurs first.
This assistance will be extended for an additional six months during hospitalization. Afterward, a sum of ₹750 per day will be granted at the conclusion of every 10-day period or upon discharge, whichever comes first, for an additional five months of hospitalization.
Individuals who have been involved in accidents at unmanned level crossings, trespassers, or those affected by electrocution from overhead equipment (OHE) will not receive any relief payment.
The Railways Act of 1989 introduced a provision that places the responsibility for compensating passengers in the event of injuries or fatalities resulting from train-related accidents and unfortunate incidents. These updated relief payments serve as an extra measure to provide financial assistance to the victims and their families.
