Rashtriya Ekta Diwas 2023 : Significance

National Unity Day honours Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who held a crucial role in consolidating princely states into the newly formed independent India following the nation's liberation from British colonial rule in 1947. His endeavours to unify the diverse and fragmented princely states into a single nation are commemorated and celebrated on this occasion.

This day also reminds us of the importance of national integration and unity. It emphasises the need to put aside differences of region, religion, language, and culture and work together as one nation. Sardar Patel's legacy as the "Iron Man of India" underscores the strength that comes from unity.

In 2018, on the 143rd birth anniversary of Sardar Patel, the "Statue of Unity" was revealed in the Indian state of Gujarat. This statue, towering at a remarkable height of 182 metres (597 feet), holds the distinction of being the tallest statue globally and is a tribute to Sardar Patel. The unveiling of this iconic monument serves as a powerful symbol, emphasising the paramount significance of unity and national identity.
