The central bank has subsequently extended the deadline for depositing and/or exchanging Rs 2,000 currency notes to October 7, 2023.

In its notification issued on May 19, 2023, the RBI discontinued the circulation of Rs 2,000 notes and requested the general public to exchange or deposit these notes at banks or the 19 regional offices of the RBI. The deadline for this exchange or deposit was set for September 30, 2023. It's worth noting that the initial notification did not provide clarity on the fate of Rs 2,000 banknotes after September 30, 2023. Importantly, the RBI did not revoke the legal tender status of Rs 2,000 banknotes. In its subsequent press release, the RBI explicitly stated that Rs 2,000 banknotes would continue to hold their legal tender status.

The option to deposit or exchange Rs 2,000 banknotes at the 19 RBI Issue Offices will remain accessible until further notice. The public is strongly advised to proceed with depositing or exchanging their Rs 2,000 banknotes without any additional delay.
