Toll Tax Deducted Twice? Here's How To Get Your Refund

Hero Image
Toll tax is a fee levied on vehicles using roads and bridges, primarily aimed at funding road construction and maintenance. In India, numerous national and state highways feature toll plazas where drivers must pay this tax. With the introduction of Fastag technology, the toll collection process has become much more efficient, eliminating the need for vehicles to stop and pay manually.

Fastag operates on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, allowing automatic toll payments as vehicles pass through toll plazas. A Fastag sticker is affixed to the vehicle’s windscreen, which is scanned by cameras at the toll booths, facilitating quick and seamless transactions.

However, errors can occur, and some drivers may find that their toll tax is deducted twice. If you encounter this issue, don’t worry—refunds are possible. Here’s how to navigate the refund process:

Two Methods to Claim Your Refund:

1. Contact the National Highway Authority of India ( NHAI ):

  • Call the NHAI toll-free number: 1033.
  • Register your complaint and make sure to note your complaint number.
  • Provide specific details such as the date, time, and amount of the duplicate toll charge.
  • Once your complaint is verified, the refund will be credited to your Fastag account, typically within 20-30 days.

2. File a Complaint with the National Payments Corporation of India ( NPCI ):

  • If your issue remains unresolved through NHAI, reach out to NPCI at 1800 120 1740.
  • Furnish details about your vehicle and the transaction number associated with the duplicate deduction.
  • After verification, you can expect the refund within 15 working days.

By following these steps, you can efficiently resolve duplicate toll charges and ensure that your funds are restored.
