# World Stroke Day 2023: History

The roots of World Stroke Day trace back to the 1990s when the European Stroke Initiative first conceived the idea of a day dedicated to stroke awareness. However, limited financial resources confined the project's execution to Europe. The European Stroke Organization, the driving force behind this initiative, observes its awareness day on May 10. It wasn't until 2004, during the World Stroke Congress in Vancouver, Canada, that October 29 was officially designated as World Stroke Day.

A dedicated working group led by Dr. Vladimir Hachinski laid the foundation for the World Stroke Proclamation , established in October 2006. During this period, the World Stroke Federation and the International Stroke Society merged, giving birth to the World Stroke Organization. This new organization took over as the custodian of World Stroke Day.

In 2009, the WSO leadership transitioned from focusing solely on a single awareness day to a year-round campaign. This shift aimed to develop a sustained strategy for enhancing public awareness of crucial aspects of stroke recognition, prevention, and treatment.

World Stroke Day remains at the heart of this campaign, featuring biennial themes designed to amplify awareness of essential issues related to stroke prevention and treatment. The inaugural campaign titled "1 in 6" was launched in 2010 by WSO.

# World Stroke Day 2023: Significance

Stroke can strike anyone, regardless of age. In fact, a startling statistic reveals that one in four adults above the age of 25 worldwide will experience a stroke at some point in their lives. The unfortunate reality is that most American adults remain unaware of the F.A.S.T. warning signs, which are pivotal in conveying that stroke is treatable, preventable, and curable.

This revelation underscores the urgent need to reduce global stroke-related fatalities and disabilities. It can be achieved by enhancing public, healthcare professional, and community awareness of stroke risk factors and warning signs.

Furthermore, by emphasizing the necessity for improved access to stroke care, research, and support networks, World Stroke Day serves as a beacon for the ongoing global efforts to enhance stroke prevention and treatment. Together, we stand against the menace of strokes, promoting a healthier and more informed world.
