According to the latest Smarter Summer Report by travel platform Skyscanner , Indian travellers are redefining their summer holidays with a focus on smarter, value-driven, and experience-rich travel. The report reveals that 96% of Indians plan to travel either as much or more than they did last year, while 95% are focused on maximising their summer break through strategic choices and flexible planning.

Flexible Itineraries and Destination Swaps on the Rise

Indian travellers are curating adaptive travel plans, with many opting for off-peak travel dates and alternative destinations to avoid overcrowding and increase affordability. Notably, 58% of respondents intend to explore new places, while 51% aim to visit multiple locations during a single trip — highlighting a growing trend toward more exploratory and meaningful travel experiences.

Tranquility Over Tourist Hotspots

A significant shift is seen in destination preferences. Over half (52%) of Indian travellers now prioritise peaceful and less crowded locations over traditional tourist-heavy spots. Additionally, around 50% are open to travelling during shoulder seasons — just before or after the peak periods — to benefit from fewer crowds and more competitive prices.

Budget-Conscious Choices and a Flexible Approach

Budget remains a top priority for many travellers. Around 62% are seeking affordable accommodation options, and 56% use comparison tools such as Skyscanner to find the best deals on flights, hotels, and car rentals. Flexibility is a defining feature of travel plans this year, with 84% willing to shift travel dates and 47% open to flying on off-peak days to secure better rates.

Planning Delays: Many Still Undecided

Despite this proactive mindset, nearly half (49%) of Indian travellers have yet to finalise their bookings. The primary reason for this delay is uncertainty about destination choices, cited by 38% of respondents. To assist travellers, the Smarter Summer Report includes helpful insights such as optimal booking windows and less conventional destination ideas. For instance, Sundays offer the cheapest day to fly, and the week of August 25th promises the most attractive seasonal fares.

Insights from Travel Experts

Mohit Joshi, Travel and Destinations Expert at Skyscanner, explains, “Indian travellers are seeking flexible, value-packed holidays but are often overwhelmed by options. Our report simplifies the decision-making process, helping people travel confidently without overspending.”

Cooler Getaways and Mountain Retreats in Demand

Escaping the heat is a major motivator this season. Half of Indian travellers are heading to cooler climates, increasing demand for hill stations and mountain destinations. In line with this trend, Skyscanner has partnered with The Land of Wanderlust to release the Ultimate Backpacker’s Guide — a comprehensive manual for travellers heading into the hills.

Sherwin Rebello, Founder of The Land of Wanderlust, notes, “Travelers are increasingly drawn to immersive, slower-paced mountain experiences. While social media continues to spark wanderlust, there is rising interest in comfort, cultural immersion, and serenity — whether among solo adventurers, digital nomads, families, or couples.”
