A tragic stampede occurred outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on June 4, claiming at least eleven lives and injuring several others. The chaos unfolded as thousands of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans gathered to celebrate the team’s maiden IPL title victory in the 2025 season, according to sources quoted by CNN-News18.

The injured were rushed to Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital and Vaidehi Hospital. Seven of the victims died at Bowring Hospital, while four others succumbed to their injuries at Vaidehi Hospital.

The stampede reportedly took place near gate numbers 3, 10, and 21 of the stadium. In response, metro services at three nearby stations — Cubbon Park, Vidhana Soudha, and MG Road — were suspended, as all are within a five-kilometre radius of the incident.

Crowd Gathers to Celebrate RCB’s First IPL Title

The massive turnout was triggered by RCB’s historic win in the IPL 2025 final, where the team defeated Punjab Kings by six runs in Ahmedabad, securing their first title in 18 years. Fans had gathered in enormous numbers to see their favorite players, including star batter Virat Kohli, who has remained loyal to the franchise since its inception.

Before arriving at the stadium, the RCB team had met Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at the Vidhana Soudha. The event at the stadium was part of a larger celebration planned by the state government to honor the team’s long-awaited achievement.

Political Fallout: BJP Blames Karnataka Government

The tragedy quickly escalated into a political flashpoint, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accusing the ruling Congress government in Karnataka of gross mismanagement.

Amit Malviya, the BJP’s IT cell head, termed the incident “criminal negligence” and insisted that accountability must be established. He said lives were lost due to negligence, not mere misfortune.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi echoed the sentiment, blaming “poor planning and crowd mismanagement” for the disaster. Tejasvi Surya, BJP MP from Bengaluru South, also expressed concern, urging citizens to celebrate responsibly and ensure that moments of joy are not marred by such tragedies.

As investigations continue, the spotlight remains on administrative lapses and crowd control failures that turned a historic celebration into a devastating event.
