The Board of Control for Cricket in India ( BCCI ) has introduced two significant rule changes for IPL 2025 , offering much-needed relief to bowlers. The announcements were made during the captains’ meet at the BCCI headquarters, as per a report by Cricbuzz.

Two Major Changes in IPL 2025

1. Saliva Ban Lifted : The long-standing ban on using saliva to shine the ball, introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, has been revoked. This move is expected to help fast bowlers generate more swing and reverse swing.
2. Second New Ball Option : Teams will now have the choice to take a second new ball after the 11th over. This change aims to counter the impact of dew, ensuring a level playing field, especially in night matches.

Impact on the Game
The decision to introduce a second ball is expected to neutralize the toss advantage and maintain fair competition. However, match umpires will have the final say on whether a new ball is necessary based on dew conditions, making this rule more applicable in night games rather than afternoon fixtures.

Why Was the Saliva Ban Lifted?

Initially enforced for safety reasons during the pandemic, the saliva ban had limited bowlers’ ability to generate movement. The call for its removal gained momentum after Indian pacer Mohammad Shami emphasized the importance of saliva for swing and reverse swing, particularly in longer formats.

With these changes, IPL 2025 is set to be a more competitive and bowler-friendly tournament . Fans can expect a fresh dynamic to the game as teams adapt to the updated regulations.
