In a clash packed with drama, big hits, and nerve-wracking moments, Royal Challengers Bengaluru ended their long-standing drought at the Wankhede Stadium with a thrilling 12-run win over Mumbai Indians in Match 21 of IPL 2025 . The high-octane encounter saw both sides trading blows until the final over, but it was RCB who emerged victorious, snapping their 10-year jinx at the iconic venue.

A Power-Packed First Innings from RCB

Opting to bat first, RCB overcame an early hiccup with the dismissal of Phil Salt in the first over, thanks to Trent Boult. What followed was a stunning counter-attack led by Devdutt Padikkal and Virat Kohli . The duo stitched a blazing 91-run partnership for the second wicket, taking the attack to Mumbai's pace battery.

Padikkal smashed 37 off 22, peppering the field with boundaries and towering sixes before Kohli took center stage. In vintage style, Kohli crafted a fluent 67 off 42 balls, his innings decorated with eight fours and two sixes - including one majestic strike while down on one knee. "Pandya ended his India teammate's hopes of reaching his first century of the season," but Kohli’s foundation was enough to set up a big total.

Rajat Patidar then stole the show with a blistering 64 off 30 balls, teaming up with Jitesh Sharma (40* off 19) to launch a late assault. Their fifth-wicket stand added 69 runs, with the 17th and 19th overs yielding massive hauls off Hardik Pandya and Trent Boult. RCB eventually posted a formidable 221/5 - their highest at Wankhede.

MI’s Chase Falters Despite Brave Fightback

Mumbai's chase got off to a shaky start as they lost Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton in quick succession. Suryakumar Yadav couldn’t break free either, crawling to 28 off 26 balls, while Will Jacks managed a promising 22 before falling.

Just when things looked bleak, Tilak Varma - returning after being retired hurt in the previous match - and skipper Hardik Pandya mounted a counter-charge. Varma slammed 56 off 29 deliveries and combined with Pandya, who exploded with a 15-ball 42, to swing the momentum back.

Their 89-run partnership suddenly had Mumbai needing just 41 from 18 balls, igniting hope in the home crowd. But Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood struck in the death overs, removing both Varma and Hardik in crucial moments.

Krunal Pandya’s Final Over Brilliance

With 28 required from the last 12 balls, the equation came down to 12 off 2 - a super over looked possible. But “Krunal Pandya claimed three wickets in the final over,” including the scalps of Mitchell Santner and Deepak Chahar off consecutive deliveries. He also dismissed Naman Dhir, who had kept the chase alive with a boundary.

Krunal finished with figures of 4/45, sealing the win in dramatic fashion and leaving Mumbai short at 209/9.

Kohli’s Wild Celebration Says It All

As the final wicket fell, Virat Kohli erupted in pure, unfiltered joy - a celebration that captured the emotions of ending a decade-long wait for victory at the Wankhede.

With contributions from every department - top-order aggression, disciplined bowling, and nerves of steel - RCB not only registered a crucial win but also sent a strong message to the rest of the league: they’re here to fight, and they’re here to win.
