Veteran Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement from both international and domestic cricket on Saturday, August 24. The 38-year-old made the announcement on X (formerly Twitter), concluding a remarkable career that began on October 20, 2010, when he debuted for India against Australia in an ODI in Visakhapatnam.


Throughout his career, Dhawan played 34 Test matches, 167 ODIs , and 68 T20Is for the Indian national team. His final appearance for India was in a match against Bangladesh in Chattogram on December 10, 2022. Dhawan's career totals stand at 2,315 runs in Test cricket, 6,793 runs in ODIs, and 1,759 runs in T20Is. He was a crucial part of India's squad across all formats during the mid-2010s and participated in two ODI World Cups.

  • Highest Score on Test Debut by an Indian Batter
Dhawan made an unforgettable Test debut against Australia on March 14, 2013, at PCA Stadium in Mohali, scoring 187 runs in the first innings. This remains the highest score by an Indian on Test debut, achieved with 174 balls, 33 fours, and two sixes.


  • Fastest Century on Test Debut
In the same debut match, Dhawan set another record by scoring the fastest century on Test debut, reaching 100 runs in just 85 balls against Australia.

  • Most Runs for India in the ICC Champions Trophy
Debuting in the Champions Trophy in 2013, Dhawan emerged as the tournament's leading run-scorer and repeated his strong performance in the 2017 edition. His 701 runs in 10 matches remain the highest by any Indian in the history of the ICC Champions Trophy.


  • Most Fours in IPL History
As the second-highest run-scorer in IPL history, Dhawan also holds the record for the most boundaries in the league, having hit 768 fours across 222 matches. Virat Kohli follows with 705 fours in 252 matches.

  • Most Runs by an Indian in a Single U-19 World Cup Edition
In the 2004 U-19 World Cup, Dhawan was in exceptional form, scoring 505 runs in seven matches for the Ambati Rayudu-led team. This remains the record for the most runs by an Indian in a single edition of the tournament.
