Meta's popular messaging platform, WhatsApp, has become a central tool for staying connected with loved ones and colleagues. However, it’s also increasingly misused for spreading misinformation, particularly with the advent of AI-generated fake images . Despite the company’s proactive steps to limit fake content, the rise in AI-manipulated visuals has become a renewed challenge.

In response, WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature to help users verify image authenticity within the app. This feature aims to offer a seamless way to assess if an image has been manipulated without needing to switch applications.

In the latest WhatsApp beta release for Android, a tool labeled "Search on web" enables users to perform reverse image searches through Google Lens. Users can access this by tapping an image in WhatsApp, selecting the three-dot menu at the top right, and choosing the new search option. Although not everyone may find this feature useful, it streamlines the process by eliminating the need to open a browser, navigate to Google Lens, and manually upload the image.

Currently, this reverse image search tool is limited to a few beta testers, so it may take some time before it becomes widely available.

Recently, WhatsApp also rolled out additional updates, including the option to store contacts within the app. Another new feature enables users to mention others in their Status, functioning similarly to Instagram Stories.
