YouTube is set to extend the video length for Shorts, allowing creators to upload content up to three minutes long, starting from October 15. Previously, YouTube Shorts focused on shorter videos, capped at 60 seconds, to compete with platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels . This change, driven by user feedback, opens up new avenues for creators to tell more detailed stories.

However, this new feature will only apply to videos that follow a square or vertical aspect ratio. Any content uploaded before the update will remain unchanged. YouTube also announced plans to improve recommendations for these extended Shorts in the near future.

Additionally, YouTube now offers users the ability to recreate their favorite Shorts with the help of templates. These templates come preloaded with new music and visual elements, letting users follow emerging trends with ease. To access these features, users can select the " Remix " button on a chosen Short and click on "Use this template."

In the coming months, YouTube will further expand its capabilities by allowing users to remix music videos and clips from their favorite content directly through the Shorts camera. This feature will give users greater flexibility in editing and enhance their creative expression on the platform.

Moreover, Google DeepMind ’s video-generating model, Veo , will soon be integrated into YouTube Shorts, as part of the company’s vision to bring more dynamic content. This tool will allow creators to design immersive settings and unique video clips, bringing their ideas to life in new ways.

In response to user feedback, YouTube is also introducing a new feature called “Show fewer Shorts.” By clicking the three dots menu on any Shorts grid in the Home feed, users can choose to see fewer Shorts temporarily, allowing for more tailored content in their feeds.
