This program aims to raise awareness of Picasso's remarkable career.
The "Picasso Celebration 1973-2023" initiative resulted from an agreement with Acción Cultural Española, under the Spanish National Commission. It features fifty exhibitions and events taking place throughout the year at prestigious cultural institutions in Europe and North America, offering a comprehensive analysis of Picasso's entire body of work. Telefónica's involvement ensures that Picasso's art becomes more accessible to diverse audiences.
Telefónica and Picasso: Guernica, Art Collection
Telefónica's commitment to culture, and specifically to Picasso's works, extends beyond this commemorative program. The company also actively supports the "Rethinking Guernica" website, a project aimed at examining the iconic mural from various perspectives, methodologies, and tools. The painting, "Guernica," created in 1937, serves as an anti-war plea and a symbol of protest against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War.
The painting was initially acquired by the Republican government in 1937 but was subsequently housed at the MoMA in New York during World War II. It wasn't until 1981, following the restoration of democracy in Spain, that "Guernica" found its permanent home in Madrid.
