A tragic incident in Brazil’s Sao Conrado has left the adventure sports community reeling. Jose de Alencar Lima Junior, a seasoned skydiving instructor and 49-year-old army veteran, fell to his death after attempting a speed fly—a thrilling air sport akin to paragliding. Lima had just leapt off a cliff when disaster struck, losing his balance as his parachute deployed.

The heart-stopping moment was captured on video and quickly spread across social media. In the clip, Lima is seen falling nearly 820 feet onto rocky terrain. As the accident unfolded, a woman’s voice in the background echoed viewers' collective dread: “Guys, I am worried.”

Eyewitnesses cited by the NY Post reported that Lima may have tripped on a hole, leading to his fatal plunge. Authorities are investigating further, including examining the possibility of equipment failure.

Adding to the complexity of the situation, Clube Sao Conrado de Voo Livre (CSCLV), the organization managing air sports at Pedra Bonita, clarified that Lima had taken off from an unauthorized spot. “The pilot did not use the ramp to take off. The spot he chose for takeoff is bad and even prohibited. The CSCLV is not responsible for the incident. With that clarification, may the pilot rest in peace.”

Lima’s extensive experience included serving in the Brazilian Army's elite Parachute Infantry Brigade and two decades of professional skydiving. Despite his expertise, this shocking accident highlights the risks inherent in extreme sports. “We have no idea what could have happened. But he was a professional skydiver for 20 years. He was experienced. What happened was an accident.” Lima, who lived in Germany, had been visiting family in Brazil when this ill-fated flight occurred.
