On July 11, the global community observes World Population Day , an annual event that calls attention to the challenges posed by the ever-growing global population.

This day serves as a reminder for nations and individuals to address these challenges in order to ensure a sustainable future for our planet. In a significant development this year, India has overtaken China as the world's most populated country.

The exponential increase in the global population has brought about numerous issues, including poverty, economic concerns, and public health challenges. To raise awareness about these pressing matters and encourage action, the United Nations established World Population Day in 1990. As we mark this important day, let us take a closer look at the top five most populous countries in the world.

India: 1.42 billion people
According to the latest estimates and projections from the United Nations, as of April 2023, India's population has surpassed 1,425,775,850 individuals, taking the lead as the most populated country in the world.

China: 1.42 billion people
After holding the title for a significant period, China has now been surpassed by India in terms of population. The UN predicts that China's population will continue to decline and may even drop below one billion by the end of this century.

United States : 331.9 million people
The population of the United States has doubled from 151 million in 1950 to 309 million in 2010. The country's population is predominantly concentrated in densely populated urban areas along the east and west coasts.

Indonesia : 273.8 million people
Indonesia boasts one of the most densely populated islands, Java, which is home to the capital city, Jakarta . Approximately 56 percent of the country's population resides on the island, as revealed by the 2020 census. Additionally, Indonesia has a relatively young population, with a median age of 30 years.

Pakistan : 231.4 million people
Pakistan stands as one of the fastest-growing countries in terms of population. Its two major cities, Karachi and Lahore, are among the most densely populated areas. The country exhibits an urban population distribution due to extensive mountainous rural regions.

As we commemorate World Population Day, let us acknowledge the significance of addressing the challenges presented by a burgeoning global population. By working together to find sustainable solutions, we can strive for a better future for all.
