Nirmala Devi walks free from prison after 11 months

MADURAI: Tainted assistant professor from Aruppukkottai , Nirmala Devi walked out of the Madurai Central Prison after spending 11 months there.

She was arrested in April 2018 after an audio clip of her luring students to do sexual favours for unnamed higher officials from the Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) went viral on social media.

While a case was initially registered with the Aruppukkottai Town police limit it was soon transferred to the CB-CID. She was suspended by the Devanga Arts College, where she was working following her arrest.

The Madurai bench of the Madras high court had granted bail to Devi on March 12.

However, she could not come out immediately as her relatives hesitated to come forward to give surety.

Her lawyer, S Pasumpon Pandian alleged that it was due to the pressure exerted by the CB-CID officials to prevent her from coming out of prison.

On Wednesday, she came out of the prison at around 12pm but refrained from talking to media as per the bail conditions.

Talking to mediapersons Pandian said the case was falsely foisted against Devi and they will deal with it legally.

He said that there was pressure from many quarters including political circles against her release on bail. Devi will cooperate with the police till the end of the case, he said.

The court has given her bail on humanitarian ground stating that even murder accused are coming out bail in 60 days. In her case it took 11 months to get bail.
