No HC reprieve for ex-DSP in idol theft case

Chennai: The Madras high court on Monday dismissed a plea moved by former deputy superintendent of police of idol wing Kader Batcha , seeking to quash an FIR registered against him in an idol theft case.

Justice V Bharathidasan passed the dismissal order. Batcha was named in the FIR dated February 27, 2017, in a theft case relating to three antique idols unearthed in Aruppukkottai.

The case was registered based on information that Batcha committed certain cognizable offences when he was discharging his duty as a police officer in idol wing CID.

Claiming that the case is ambiguous and fabricated, Batcha claimed that the allegations in the FIR were vague and had no essence to attract any offence under the Indian Penal Code.“The case is hypothetical and there is no material to substantiate that the idols existed,” Batcha said. However, refusing to accept his contentions, the judge dismissed the plea.
