Odisha: One minor died, 5 under treatment after consuming government-run hostel's meal

Bhubaneshwar: A minor student died while five others fell ill after consuming the hostel meal of a government-run school in Odisha's Gajapati district. The police officials confirmed the incident on Sunday.

News agency PTI reported, the inmates of the residential primary school at a village complained of vomiting, nausea and stomach ache a few hours after they had dinner on Saturday night.

The school is under the jurisdiction of Garabandha police station. District Education Officer (DEO), P K Nag told the agency that the minor girls who showed the symptoms of food poisoning were immediately rushed to a nearby local hospital.

The deceased was identified as Tuni Rohit, a student of Class 4 who died in the early hours on Sunday while undergoing treatment. Meanwhile, the five other students are still undergoing treatment and have been admitted to the hospitals.

Meanwhile, the DEO told PTI, the district administration has placed the headmaster of the school, Umakant Choudhury and the teacher-in-charge Anita Nayak, under suspension. However, further investigation in this case is underway.

Earlier, in March a similar case was reported from Telangana Minorities Residential School for girls at Shahalibanda, where nearly 60 students were admitted to a hospital after consuming breakfast at the school.

Out of 65, six students were admitted to ICU, remaining 59 children of the school were kept under observation at the hospital. The incident came to light when 65 students of the school complained about uneasiness and vomiting. They were immediately shifted to  Asra hospital for treatment.

Reportedly, the students were served bondas for breakfast, hence the quality of the floor used to make the food is under question.
