Painkillers' overuse may invite headaches

Chandigarh: Over consumption of easily available painkillers may not just lead to adverse effects related to these medications, but may also trigger ‘ medication overuse headaches (MOH)’. These facts related to headaches were discussed in a public talk held under the theme ‘Janta ke saath- PGI ka haath’ in PGI on Saturday.

MOH develops in patients with established headache disorders like migraine or tension-type headaches who overuse medication in an attempt to alleviate their symptoms.

Prof Vivek Lal, neurologist and PGI director, highlighted the role of exercise and weight management in one's life. “Lifestyle changes, like diet modification, regular aerobic exercise, sticking to a daily routine and stress management can also be of enormous benefit,” he said.

The awareness programme was organised by the department of neurology .
