Patna zoo to get 22 new inmates from Chennai

PATNA: The Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, commonly known as Patna zoo, is set to welcome new inmates from Assam and Chennai soon. Under the animal exchange programme of Central Zoo Authority (CZA), Patna zoo will get 31 animals in exchange of eight of its inmates.

As a part of the animal exchange programme with Arignar Anna Zoological Park (Vandalur zoo) at Chennai, Patna zoo will get a pair each of Royal Bengal tiger and lion-tailed macaque, also known as the bruh, 12 painted stork, two each of white peacock, ostrich and reticulated python.

The animals are expected to arrive from Chennai by August-end.

Patna zoo director Amit Kumar told this newspaper that a team of officials from Vandalur zoo are likely to reach with the animals by August 29 or 30. “In exchange of 22 animals, we are giving one female rhinoceros and three ghariyals (1 male and two females) to Vandalur zoo. Among the new inmates, painted stork, lion-tailed macaque and reticulated python will be the new attraction at city zoo,” he said.

“For painted stork, we have an empty cage while an enclosure for lion-tailed macaque has been prepared near monkey cage. With addition of reticulated python, we will have seven species of snakes. Reticulated python will be kept at the reptile house,” he added.

The swapping of zoo inmates is done under the animal exchange programme. Once the zoos agree to an exchange of animals, the details are submitted to CZA for its approval.

Also arriving soon will be pairs of four sangai deer (also known as dancing or Manipuri deer) and one male rhinoceros from Assam State Zoo-cum-Botanical Garden. In exchange, Patna zoo will give one female giraffe and three black bucks (one male and two female).

Recently, Patna zoo has got a two-year-old female zebra named as ‘Bubli’ from Alipore zoo in Kolkata in exchange of one white tigress, a pair of sambar (large deer) and pairs of three black bucks.

Earlier, the CZA had given consent to Patna zoo for several animal exchange programmes, including with Delhi’s National Zoological Park, Denmark’s Danish Zoo and Bhopal’s Van Vihar National Park.
