Poll blitz pushes cabs biz in fast lane, cabbies all smiles

Indore: The election season has given a thrust to the travel and rental cab segment witnessing a sharp jump in business amid increased travel movement by political parties for campaigning and meetings while hotels have also witnessed an uptick in bookings.

The hired taxi services usually see a seasonal hike in demand during weddings but election campaigning for the Lok Sabha 2024 has further lifted the demand for rental cabs.

Jitendra Kumar Ojha, an owner at a rental can services said, “Every day I am getting bookings for 4-5 vehicles these days as against 1 or zero bookings normally. Demand for rental cabs has gone up in summer due to weddings and elections. Most bookings are coming for local cities run from political parties or for weddings.”

Tariff for rental cabs and hotel rooms has gone up owing to the surge in demand.

Another rental cab service at Vijay Nagar in Indore has received bookings for a week from a political party.

“Enquiries are huge for both weddings and elections. But compared to the last assembly election, political bookings are less. Summer vacations and weddings are the peak demand period for us and this time elections have also come which has further boosted the demand in our sector,” said Rohit Jain, a travel operator. Demand for accommodation in the hotel industry has also gone up by over 25 per cent since the last month, said industry players from the hotel industry.

Hotels have seen a rise in bookings from corporates, tourists and for weddings.

Sumit Suri, president, Indore Hoteliers’ Association said, “Hotels are doing well and we are anticipating around 15-20 per cent rise in business in the summer season. Unlike the assembly election, room bookings from political parties are not much but maximum bookings are coming from tourists and business purposes.”
