PSG to be Champions League winners? Real Madrid, Man City, Chelsea risk exit from UCL semis over Super League

The formulation of the breakaway European Super League has left the football world infuriated. Be it fans, former players, current player, coaches or even journalists, the idea of forming a closed-door tournament has been slammed left-right-center. While UEFA, European football's governing body, has confirmed that players participating in the tournament will be banned from the upcoming European Championship, it has now been learned that the clubs participating in the Super League could also be dumped out of this season's UEFA Champions League.

The idea of a Super League stands against the ethos of football that gives the right of qualification to every club that is a part of the European football structure. Through the concept of Super League, the so-called 'rich clubs' of European football aspire to become even richer by being a part of the tournament that wouldn't even require them to earn a qualification, unlike the Champions League.

The concept, hence, diminishes the competitive nature of the beautiful game. While these clubs look set to go ahead with the tournament, the decision will come with its repercussions, not just from next season but quite possibly from this season itself.

"The clubs must go, and I expect that to happen on Friday. Then we have to find out how to finish (this season's) Champions League tournament," said Jesper Moller, who is the head of the Danish FA, told DR. "There is an extraordinary executive committee meeting on Friday."

"We're still assessing our legal team but we will take all the sanctions that we can and we will inform you as soon we can," he said. "My opinion is that as soon as possible they have to be banned from all our competitions and the players from all our competitions," UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin told reporters.

The Champions League 2020-21 season has the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea, PSG and Real Madrid still alive in the competition. Of these, Man City, Chelsea and Real are a part of the new 20-team Super League tournament that will take place mid-week from the next season.

If UEFA decides to sanction these clubs, the trio of clubs would be suspended from the Champions League right away, making PSG the automatic winners.

At the moment, PSG are scheduled to take on Man City in the semi-finals of the UCL while Chelsea have been paired with Real Madrid.
