Pune teen falls to death after cable snaps during parasailing at Murud beach

Navi Mumbai: In a tragic incident, a 15-year-old school student died after the rope of his canopy snapped during parasailing at Murud-Janjira beach in Raigad district of Maharashtra. The boy was a student of class 10.

The incident occurred on Saturday when the boy was parasailing with his father at the beach.

The cable of the canopy snapped from 50 feet above the ground leading to the death of the boy. The victim has been identified as Vedant Pawar from Pune. His father, who owned a courier business, was also injured in the accident.  

"Vedant Pawar and his father Ganesh were strapped to two harnesses with one canopy over their head. The parasailing equipment was fastened with a common rope that was strapped to the jeep that was to take them over a stretch of 800 metres along the beach. Suddenly, the rope snapped due to which the teenager and his father dropped on the beach even as the jeep was moving," a Times of India

report quoted  Police constable G D as saying.

The two suffered multiple injuries and were rushed to local hospital from where they were referred to Alibaug Civil Hospital. According to the report, the father-son duo were part of a picnic group from Pune to Murud-Janjira.

"The boy was bleeding heavily from the nose, ear and backside. He also had a head injury. The boy was gasping. while his father has a fracture to the left elbow joint besides deep wounds,” the report quoted said Dr Sumaiyya Shaikh, Resident medical officer at Murud Rural Hospital, as saying.

 
Meanwhile, the police have booked parasailing operator, Sagar Chavalkar, for illegally organising the adventure events.  Maritime board officials have claimed that parasailing operators are doing illegal business on the beach. Officials have also launched a probe whether Chavalkar had a license to operate adventure sports events.
