QBengaluru: 13 Rebel MLAs Get BJP Tickets; Mishap Averted at KIA

1. 16 Disqualified Karnataka MLAs Join BJP; 13 Get Tickets for Bypoll

A day after Supreme Court paved way for them to contest the 5 December Assembly bypolls in Karnataka, 16 disqualified Congress-JD(S) legislators on Thursday, 14 November, joined the BJP.

Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, state BJP Chief Nalin Kumar Kateel and National General Secretary In Charge of Karnataka P Muralidhar Rao were among those who welcomed them to the party fold.

BJP, that aims to win a majority of the 15 constituencies where bypolls will be held, is likely to field most of the MLAs in question as the party candidates.

However, R Roshan Baig, a disqualified Congress legislator from Shivajinagar, was not inducted into the party on Thursday. BJP sources cited “reservations” expressed by party leadership over Baig, who is facing inquiry in the IMA Ponzi Scam, among the reasons for his non-induction.

2. GoAir's Dangerous Take-off, Mishap Averted at KIA Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru

A major mishap was averted at the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) here on Thursday as a GoAir Airbus A320 flight with 180 passengers on board executed a dangerous take-off just after landing. The flight had veered off the runway into a grass patch after touchdown.

Aviation watchdog, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered an inquiry into the incident. The GoAir Nagpur-Bengaluru flight G8-811 was flown by an expat pilot, who has been placed on suspension.

Although the Air Traffic Control (ATC) had given the go-ahead to land on runway 09, bad weather and poor visibility reportedly made landing tough. The pilot could not maneouvre the plane safely on the runway and it veered off onto a grass strip on one side of the runway.

3. ULB Polls: BJP Wins More Civic Bodies, Cong More Wards Photo used for representation.

In what has enthused the Congress, the party secured the highest number of seats by winning 151 out of 418 wards across 14 urban local bodies (ULB) that went to polls, whose results were declared on Thursday. The BJP came second with 125 wards, followed by JD(S) with 63 wards.

In terms of ULBs won, BJP came on top. Elections for 14 ULBs, including Mangalore and Davanagere City Corporations, were held on 20 October. The verdict was fractured in nine of the 14 ULBs, while BJP secured the required numbers in Mangalore City Corporation, Kampli Town Municipal Council (TMC), Kundgol Town Panchayat (TP) and Sagara City Municipal Council (CMC).

4. State May Ban Sale of Junk Food in and Around Schools Image used for representational purposes. 

Noodles, pizzas, french fries, burgers, chips, samosas and gulab jamuns will be among a range of junk food items whose sale is likely to be banned within 50 metres of and on the premises of schools across Karnataka.

On Thursday, primary and secondary education minister S Suresh Kumar issued a directive to the department’s principal secretary to frame rules for implementation of the junk food ban. Citing the draft Food Safety and Standards (Safe Food and Healthy Diets for Schoolchildren) Regulations, 2019 issued on 30 October by the Union health and family welfare ministry, Kumar said the ban must be implemented in the state immediately. The minister said it should cover carbonated beverages, processed fruit juice packs and other such junk food.

5. Design Manager WhatsApps Suicide Note to Kin, Ends Life Representational image of a crime scene. 

A 28-year-old design manager of a private engineering service company allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of his workplace in Kachohalli village, Madanayakanahalli, off Tumakuru Road, early Wednesday morning. He sent a picture of his death note to his family and friends via WhatsApp before taking the extreme step.

Madanayakanahalli police said Mylaresha KG, a resident of Kachohalli, blamed his company owner Kushal Kumar DB and friend Purushotham in his suicide note. An abetment case has been registered against the duo. According to the note, Mylaresh alleged Kushal, who was also a close friend of his, forced him to quit his job in a private company in Electronics City and join his firm, Accrue SPMS.
