1. Extortion Case: Court Denies Bail to Shahjahanpur Woman's Friend

A local court on Thursday, 17 October rejected the bail plea of Sanjay Singh, a friend of the law student who has accused former Union minister Swami Chinmayanand of rape.

Sanjay Singh was booked in a case of extortion along with the woman and two others after they allegedly demanded Rs 5 crore from Chinmayanand.

The woman is currently lodged in a jail. District Judge Shyam Babu rejected the bail plea of Sanjay, Chinmayanand's lawyer Om Singh said.

2. Court Delivers Verdict in Rape Case Within 36 Days of FIR

A POCSO court in Auraiya decided a rape case within 36 days of the FIR being filed.

Additional district judge (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Rajesh Chowdhary on Wednesday, 16 October sentenced the accused Anshu Yadav to life imprisonment for the rape of a 10-year-old girl.

The girl was raped in a village near Dibiyapur on September 9 and the police filed the charge sheet on September 24, according to the court order. The court took 21 days to complete the trial. The incident took place when the girl was on her way back from a bank. According to the FIR, her father had sent her to open a bank account as he was too busy to go himself. But bank officials turned the girl away on the ground that she was a minor.

3. Police Cracks Alliance University ex-VC's Murder

A day after the murder of the former Vice Chancellor of Alliance University Dr Ayappa Dore, the city police, in a swift action, arrested Sudhir Angur (57), the Chancellor of the university for hiring contract killers (supari killing) for Rs 1 crore to eliminate Dore.

He even had plans to murder his own brother Madhukar Angur with whom he has several civil disputes for winning over the ownership of the university.

The RT Nagar police have arrested Sudhir Angur and his associate Suraj Singh for murdering Dore at the HMT Ground in RT Nagar on Tuesday night. The police team are yet to nab four of the assailants who executed the murder.

4. Three Held for Kerala RSS Man’s Murder also Killed BJP man in 1995: Cops

Arrested on charges of killing an RSS worker in Kerala’s Thrissur district in 1994, three activists of now-defunct extremist outfit Jam-Iyyathul-Ishhaniya have confessed to the murder of another BJP leader in neighbouring Malappuram district the following year, according to the officer probing the 1994 murder.

Mohanachandran, a local BJP leader from Mankada, in Malappuram, was found dead on August 19, 1995.

According to police, the breakthrough came last week with the arrest of Kuruppam Veetil Moinudheen, alias Moidu, 49, who was a member of the now-inactive Jam-Iyyathul-Ishhaniya in connection with the 1994 murder of RSS worker Manamkulam Veetil Sunil.

5. Sexagenarian Pushed During Street Quarrel, Dies

A sexagenarian died on Thursday after he was allegedly pushed by a car driver during a heated exchange over excessive honking in south Kolkata, police said.

Ramesh Behel, 62, fell on the ground and lost consciousness after being pushed by the driver when he protested excessive honking by him, a police officer said.

"The incident happened around 1PM when Behel, a resident of Bakulbagan area, was getting inside his car and another vehicle started honking from behind to give way. When Behel protested, it turned ugly. The accused came out of his car and pushed him following which the old man fell on the ground and fainted," the police officer said.

6. Unable to Pay Back ₹96 Lakh, Man Hires Killers to Murder Businessman

The Ghaziabad police Thursday arrested five persons, including two of three hired shooters, for their alleged involvement in murdering a 45-year-old businessman, Amit Seth, on the afternoon of September 25 at Chiranjeev Vihar.

The police said the murder was planned by the victim’s acquaintance from Raj Nagar who was unable to pay back ₹96 lakh, despite repeated requests by Seth.

The five suspects were identified as Rohit Gupta of Raj Nagar, his accomplices Sundar Singh of Dujana village in Gautam Budh Nagar, Veeru of Kharkhauda in Meerut, and hired shooters Akash Kumar and Pawan Kumar. A third hired killer, Sagar, is still on the run.

7. TV Journalist, Two Others Arrested for Wife’s Murder in Etawah

A Delhi-based TV journalist, along with two others, was arrested for his wife’s murder in Etawah, the police said on Thursday.

Ajitesh Mishra, who worked for a news channel, was arrested with his alleged lover, employed by the same channel, and another journalist Akhil Kumar Singh, the police said.

Senior superintendent of police, Etawah, Santosh Mishra said Mishra planned the murder and Akhil Kumar Singh executed it as he was familiar with the victim.

8. Punjab: Vigilance Bureau AIG Booked for Rape

A senior officer of the Vigilance Bureau has been booked for allegedly raping a woman in Patiala between 2016 and 2018.

The State Special Operations Cell (SSOC) on Thursday nominated Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Vigilance Bureau (VB), Ashish Kapoor, in an FIR registered previously against some jail officials and gangsters. Kapoor was nominated on charges of rape, criminal intimidation and under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The rape charge was added to the existing FIR, which was registered on 1 May.
