QCrime: Lawyers Chase & Attack People; 6 Men Get Lifer in K'taka

1. Lawyers ‘Chase and Attack’ People, Cops Watch From a Safe Distance

An auto-rickshaw driver was left with a fractured arm as lawyers allegedly chased and attacked policemen, journalists and civilians in and around Delhi’s district courts on Monday, the first day of their strike organised to protest clashes with the police at Tis Hazari court on Saturday, the police said.

Despite videos showing lawyers purportedly slapping a policeman, thrashing passersby, and vandalising police property, the Delhi Police did not intervene in most of these attacks.

2. Six Get Life Term for Murder in Mangaluru

The fourth additional district and sessions court judge Ramalinge Gowda awarded life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 3,000 each to six persons for the murder of Melrick Antony D'Souza, 21, in Karnataka's Mangaluru, the district headquarters of Dakshina Kannada.

Melrick was hacked to death by a gang of five, 25 December 2017 at 1:10 am, in retaliation to an attempt to murder Sandeep Shetty, 34, a resident of Jeppu Kudpady.

3. In Delhi, Architect Says Molested by Group of Men on Way Home

A 39-year-old woman architect has alleged she was molested and assaulted by six men at an upscale colony in South Delhi Sunday. The woman has told police that she was on her way home when the men stopped her car and attacked her. Police said they have registered a case and are investigating the matter to identify the men.

“I was returning home from my office around 7 pm when five-six men stood in front of the car when I was five minutes away. I rolled down the window and asked them to move aside. All of a sudden, one of them rushed towards me and groped me.

4. Ahmedabad: Dalit Youth Stripped, Flogged After Altercation With Restaurant Owner

A Dalit youth was allegedly stripped and flogged and another assaulted by a group of men at a roadside eatery in Sabarmati Toll Naka area of Ahmedabad on Sunday night. A purported video of the incident that emerged Monday was reminiscent of the Una flogging incident in 2016, which had rocked Gujarat politics.

In the video, a youth is seen being stripped and beaten with sticks. He has been admitted in Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital, and is reportedly in critical condition. The other youth, who had sustained injuries, was not hospitalised.

5. Three Arrested for Cattle Smuggling in Pratapgarh

With the arrest of three persons in Pratapgarh, police on Monday claimed to have busted an inter-state gang involved in cattle smuggling for slaughter.

The accused, Mohammad Babu (47) of Meerut, Saleem (45) of Muzaffarnagar and Zahir (37) of Mathura, were arrested from near Ganga bridge in Hathigawa area of Pratapgarh.

6. West Bengal: Man Held for Killing Woman, Forest Staffer

A man was arrested for stabbing an elderly woman to death and later killing an employee of the forest department for protesting her murder in Bankura district Monday, police said.

The accused was identified as Arup Choudhury. The woman and the man were identified as Lichu Roy (64) and Ajit Choudhury (56).

7. Teen’s Suicide: 2 Minors Detained for ‘Blackmailing Girl With Her Nudes’

Police have detained two minors after a 17-year-old girl allegedly attempted suicide by consuming poison in Mumbai. Police said the girl, hospitalised since October 29, said she had shared her nude pictures with a male friend who then forwarded those images to his friend.

According to police, the girl had decided to end her life because the friend had started demanding sexual favours from her in return for deleting the pictures. Police said her parents found her in an ailing condition and rushed her to a nearby hospital.

8. Nine Held for Making Fake IDs of Defence, NHAI, Administration Officials in Mohali

Nine persons were arrested on Monday by Mohali Police for making fake (ID) cards, presumably for toll tax exemptions at the Dera Bassi toll plaza. Police, however, suspect it to be an extortion racket as fake ID cards of officials in the defence forces, civil administration, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and even journalists were seized after raids.

Acting on a tip-off in which the name of the informant was not disclosed, the police raided a number of spots near Dera Bassi, to arrest Brijesh Bhardwaj from Uttar Pradesh, now living in Dariya village in Chandigarh and Mohit Sharma of Jhajjar living in Dera Bassi.

9. Hyderabad: 2 From UP Held for Cheating People With Fake Gold Coins

Two inter-state fraudsters from Uttar Pradesh were on Monday arrested for cheating people with fake gold coins and siphoninh off money, police said.

Acting on a tip, a police team apprehended the duo, who hail from Kannauj district of Uttar Pradesh and found that they palmed off fake gold coated coins by luring people and disappeared after collecting money.
