Rainwater harvesting systems to be developed in government school buildings in Kurukshetra

AMBALA: The Kurukshetra nodal officer for Jal Shakti campaign additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Parth Gupta told that the decreasing water level of the district is a serious concern as in the last 45 years, the water level of Kurukshetra has slipped away by 30.09 meter. To improve the water level, rainwater harvesting systems will be developed in government schools and buildings.

The district administration officials told that in the year 1974, the groundwater level of Kurukshetra was 10.55 meter and now in June 2019, the same has gone down to 40.64 meter and keeping this scary situation in the mind, the central and state governments have decided to develop water harvesting system and not only this the abandoned borewells will be revived.

While talking to media in Kurukshetra, ADC Parth Gupta said, “Due to the exploitation of groundwater in all the seven blocks of Kurukshetra district, today, the situation has worsened and water is being misused and wasted in the entire district. If we talk about the agricultural sector , 37,277 tubewells are being used for irrigation purpose which is exploiting the largest amount of groundwater. Due to the extraction of groundwater in Kurukshetra district, every year it is depleting by 2 meter. Under the Jal Shakti campaign we will spread awareness to conserve water and we all have to understand our moral duty to save every single drop of water.”

10 to 15 rainwater harvesting systems to be installed in every block

Groundwater Fund Officer Dr Mahavir Singh said, “Under the Jal Shakti campaign 80 rainwater harvesting systems will be installed with Rs 2 crore in Kurukshetra district. Every block will house 10 to 15 such harvesting systems so that rainwater is used to recharge the groundwater table. These systems will be installed in government schools and buildings. The school teachers and students will understand the importance of water and they will further spread awareness and motivate their relatives to conserve water.”

Agriculture officers to push for crop diversification

ADC Parth said, “A total of 37,277 tubewells are extracting groundwater for irrigating agricultural fields and the agriculture officers are instructed to push for crop diversification and urging farmers to adopt such crops which require less water.”
