Rajasthan: Locust menace on in Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer: Huge swarms of locusts have continued to come in India from border areas of Pakistan. Ramgarh of Jaisalmer was again attacked on Saturday distressing farmers . They were seen at Nokh , Nachna , Mohangarh , Peedhi and Larika . Crops in Barmer district have also been damaged.

According to sources, they went towards canal at Ramgarh, Tibda, Tanot and damaged crops.

Sources said efforts made to control locusts are insufficient. Authorities were informed but by the time team reached locusts had proceeded to other areas, farmers said.

Harvests got damaged in many villages of Shiv sub-division in Barmer district as well. A complaint was filed at Barmer district collector’s office in Rathri Chaupal of Tamlore village. Villagers have demanded compensation. District collector has directed SDM to collect the report of damage within three days.

Minister B D Kalla said Pakistan has failed in controlling the locust menace. "We are trying to control the situation by coordinating with authorities," he said. An officer said locusts could not be controlled due to the use of expired pesticides by Pakistan in the desert areas. The efficacy of fresh pesticide would have been more than the ones used by Pakistan, sources said.
