Ready to help Congress to stop BJP, says AIUDF

GUWAHATI: All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief and MP Badruddin Ajmal has offered to override his party’s prospects and appealed to Congress to enter an understanding and stem a saffron tide in the upcoming Lok Sabha election.

“We are eager to help if Congress wants our help. We can sacrifice even our electoral prospect to stop BJP.

AIUDF’s 2 to 2.5 lakh votes can do a lot in preventing BJP’s growth, provided we have the right understanding,” Ajmal said. He added he has moved on from the then CM Tarun Gogoi’s barb, “Who is Badruddin?”, after AIUDF sought to be part of Congress government in 2011. “I have no more qualms on the barb,” he said.

On Saturday, AIUDF announced candidates for three seats out of eight it decided to contest. Ajmal, who is an incumbent MP from Dhubri, will seek re-election from same constituency. AIUDF’s sitting MP Radheshyam Biswas will also seek re-election from Karimganj (SC) constituency in Barak Valley . From Barpeta parliamentary constituency, AIUDF has declared Hafiz Rafiqul Islam instead of incumbent MP and Ajmal’s younger brother, Sirajuddin Ajmal . AIUDF said candidates for the remaining eight seats will be declared soon.

Congress said under no situation is it going to have any understanding with Ajmal.
