Record NEET participants in the state, exam goes without a hitch

Kochi: About 1.26 lakh students appeared for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (Undergraduate), NEET (UG), the qualifying test for admission to MBBS and allied courses in the country which is conducted by the National Testing Agency, at 303 exam centres across the state on Sunday. “This is the highest participation for NEET (UG) in the state,” said an official overseeing the exam centres in the state.

“Around 90 to 94% of the students who registered appeared for the exam,” the official said. The exam was held in a single shift and began as per the scheduled time (2.00pm to 5.20pm). Students were asked to report one hour before the commencement of the exam and were not allowed to enter the hall after 1.30 pm. Most students had arrived in the morning itself.

Students had to undergo inspections and security checks before being admitted to the exam halls. There was also a strict dress code.

The official stated that most of the activities were automated and students could enter exam halls after biometric verification and physical checks. Mobile phone jammers were installed at all exam centres along with CCTV cameras to enable officials in Delhi to monitor all activities at centres across the country.

Despite soaring temperatures, parents and relatives were seen standing outside the gates of the exam centres for several hours, waiting to receive their children.

Among the centres, 32 were in Ernakulam, with a total of 15,808 students appearing for the exam in the district. In Kozhikode, as many as 17,252 candidates wrote the exam at 39 centres in the district.
