Schools hike fees by 6-20% in DK dist

Mangaluru: The school fee hike percentage for the current academic year in the coastal districts has remained the same compared to the previous one, at between 6 to 15%. However, some schools that did not increase their fees after the Covid-19 pandemic, have now raised it by a maximum of 20%.

According to schools, the usual pre-pandemic hike of fees was around 5%, but they have not implemented any fee increment for almost two years.

As a result, they are forced to hike fees between a minimum of 6 to 15% every year. Whereas some schools which had done the maximum hike last academic year, have hiked it by just Rs 1,000 overall. For example, a school that has Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education Curriculum, has hiked its lower primary school fee from Rs 1.06 lakh to Rs 1.12 lakh.

Another school offering the ICSE syllabus, has increased its fee by just Rs 1,000, compared to last year. “We have been doing a fee hike between 7-10% every year, and this year it is around 10%. In fact, we had reduced the fee during the pandemic,” said Sr Melissa, principal of Mount Carmel Central School, which teaches the CBSE syllabus. Last year, it was around a 7-8% hike. “We have done an annual hike of 7-10% this year. The amount hiked is reserved for salaries,” said Mathew C Ninan, director of Little Rock Indian School in Brahmavar, Udupi. While some some schools have kept the fee hike below 10%, some have increased it to a maximum of up to 20%.

“For the first time, we have increased the fee up to 15%. It is due to the campus having added additional facilities this year,” shared Mahesh Shetty J, secretary of Balavikas Trust, Peraje, Mani. “Apart from a 20% fee hike, the school has also increased text book rates, and we are paying an additional Rs 2,000 this academic year,” shared a parent whose kids study at a CBSE school in Moodbidri. The schools expressed that the fee hike is needed for the smooth running of the institutions. A lot of schools have not given a salary hike to their staff after the Covid.
