Selfie death menace continues! 3 boys crushed to death by train in Panipat

Panipat: In a tragic incident, three youth were crushed by a passenger train while they were busy taking selfies on the track near Panipat on Monday.  The three deceased have been identified as  Chaman, Sunny and Kishan.

The three of the four youths were residents Aligarh district in Uttar Pradesh.  The fourth youth, who hailed from Delhi, had a narrow escape.  According to a report in

Times of India, all four worked as labourers and were in Panipat to attend the wedding of a relative.

The four men were strolling on the railway track clicking photographs of each other from their mobile phones, according to eyewitnesses.

The report says the youth later lined up on tracks to take selfies even as a train was fast approaching. The fourth youth named Dinesh sighted the approaching train and jumped away from the tracks after alerting the three victims.The three deceased jumped towards the left and were ran over by the train.

“The impact was so severe that their body parts were strewn across a 30-feet radius. As the train passed, Dinesh found them crushed on the track and fainted in shock,” the report quotes a GRP officer as saying. The bodies of the victims were handed over to their respective families after autopsy proceedings.

According to Government Railway police, two mobile phones were recovered from the tracks. Experts have warned that some youths are going overboard to take selfies in dangerous conditions so as to post them on social media.

According to a 2018 study conducted by All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), 259 people across the world died while taking selfies between 2011 and 2017. The study further suggested that the highest number of selfie deaths were reported from India followed by Russia, United States, and Pakistan.
