Shift Shahjahanpur girl and brother to another college: Supreme Court

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed that the LLM student who has levelled sexual harassment allegations against former Union minister Swami Chinmayanand be transferred out of the college run by him.

After additional solicitor general Vikramjit Banerjee said the UP government had made all arrangements for the girl, studying in Swami Shukdevanand Law College, to be accommodated in Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University, a bench of Justices R Banumathi and AS Bopanna ordered that she be shifted.

Her brother, studying in the same college, will also be shifted to Shreeji Institute of Legal and Vocational Studies and the state government assured the court that both would be provided hostel accommodation.

Thereafter, the bench wrapped up the suo motu proceedings which were initiated when the girl went missing after levelling sexual harassment charges against Chinmayanand. The bench refused to get into the allegations when advocates sought the court's direction on other issues related to the case. The bench said the main purpose of its intervention was to provide security to the girl and ensure that her studies were not discontinued. The court said it would not expand the scope of the case and the girl was free to raise her grievances before the Special Investigation Team which will probe the case.

It asked the girl and her parents to approach the Allahabad HC for further directions.
