Shillong Archbishop dies in US car crash

SHILLONG: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday mourned the demise of archbishop of the Shillong Arch Diocese, Right Reverend Dominic Jala, who died in a car crash in California on October 10.

Born at Mawlai in Shillong on July 12, 1951, Jala is the second Indian archbishop to die in a car accident abroad.

On June 20, 2000, Archbishop Alan de Lastic of Delhi had died in a car crash in Poland.

"Rev. Domnic Jala will always be remembered for his impeccable service to the society and for his passion towards Meghalaya 's Progress. May his soul rest in peace," the PM tweeted.

Archbishop Jala had been ordained a priest for the Salesians of Don Bosco on November 19, 1977. He was the provincial of the congregation's Guwahati province before he was appointed the Archbishop of Shillong in December 1999.

Meanwhile, arrangements are being made to fly in the mortal remains of the Archbishop to Shillong.
