'Shortage of organ donors in North India'

Chandigarh: There is a shortage of organ donors in north India as the concept of donation came here late, Dr Anil Kumar , director of National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organisation, said in a round-table workshop organised by Regional Organ & Tissue Transplant Organisation on Friday.

To correct this imbalance, the govt has created a network regarding organ donation, linking the entire process to one registry, he said.

“All these national and regional organisations have been added to the registry created for organ donation. With this, 854 hospitals carrying out organ donation and transplantation have been added in the country. At present, there are five regional and 21 state-level organ donation organisations in the country,” Dr Kumar said.

Attended by over 150 delegates, the event underscored the urgent need for requisite infrastructure, motivated healthcare professionals, and community engagement to accelerate the deceased organ donation programme.
